5 Day Nyiragongo & Mountain Gorilla trekking and Tchegera Island.

 

This tour starts from Kigali International Airport to drop you back at the same place. You will have that chance to see closely the rare mountain gorillas and to visit the largest magma lake in the world by hiking the active Nyiragongo Volcano. You will also stay one night at the scenic and peaceful Tchegera Island.

Day 1(October 7th): Kigali to Congo border via the Rwandan cultural village

After breakfast you will drive 4 hours toward the north-west and  to Congo border and arrive at La cornice border (Grande Barriere) cross around 12.

After checking in and registering in Virunga Office, you will stop in Goma town for lunch before driving to Virunga National Park. 

Around 3 pm you will check in the luxurious Kibumba Tented Camp at the Mikeno Volcano feet.

Go for an evening nature walk, guided birdwatching evening inside the king kong jungle.

Over evening retire in a luxury tent.

Day 2(October 8th ): Mountain Gorillas trekking

After an early breakfast at Kibumba Tented Camp, you will head in the jungle to be guided and have a briefing before the gorilla trek. It usually requires up to 2.5 hours of hiking one way, depending on the location of the gorilla group and depending on the difficulty of the path. After spending one hour with the gorilla family group, you will make your way back to camp, enjoy a late lunch and have the rest of the day at leisure at Kibumba tented camp.

Day 3(October 9th):  Nyiragongo hiking up

After breakfast in Kibumba, around 8 am, you will be transported in your escorted private Jeep to the Kibati rangers station which is the departure point for the Nyiragongo volcano expedition. On arrival to Kibati, you will receive a briefing and will have the opportunity to hire porters.

You start the climb up at 10 am. It will take around four to six hours(normal hike) to reach out the top  and you will stay near the crater rim overnight in cabanas.

Day 4(October 10th): Descent Nyiragongo Volcano and transfer to Tchegera Island

In the early morning, you will leave the crater rim and start the descent back to Kibati. Average descent time is four hours. Once at the bottom, you will be transported immediately to Lake Kivu shores and get in the speed boat toward Tchegera Island.

You will get your lunch in the island while relaxing above the peaceful water. The view is splendid and the atmosphere is very relaxing.

Check in the luxurious tented camp and after shower, you will go out either for bird watching and photography or for kayaking around. 

 

Get your dinner under millions of stars while contemplating red hat of the giant volcano in front of you.

Overnight, check in your luxurious Tchegera tented camp room.

Day5(October 11th): Ride back to the border, drive to Kigali and fly back home

After breakfast, get in the speedboat and ride to Goma town. Optionally,  go for a short city tour, visit the local market, the famous Tshukudu roundabout before driving to the border.

Cross back to Rwanda at lunch time and after lunch, drive some 4 hours straight to Kigali.

You will arrive in Kigali around 4 PM time to pass by a made-in-Rwanda shop for buying souvenirs or stopping at a coffee shop for testing the testy and popular Rwanda Coffee before driving to the airport for your evening flight.
